Last year Chicago Blackhawks forward Richard Panik had a break-out year scoring 22 goals and 22 helpers, earning himself a 2 year $5.6 million contract with the team. This Season, Panik has gone completely off the radar with a few blips here and there. Panik is far from the 44 point player he was last year. In 31 games Panik has 14 points on pace for a 36 point season but with each game that number slightly drops, I'd be surprised if he gets anywhere close to 30 points. The last time Richard Panik scored a goal was October 21st, since then he's only had 6 assists. It was starting to look like Stan Bowman stole a solid player from the Toronto Maple Leafs for basically nothing, now it's starting to look like last year was an anomaly for Richard Panik and we may never see those numbers again. What Should the Blackhawks do with Richard Panik? Some might think that the Blackhawks should trade Panik, the only problem is what exactly would the Blackhawks get for him? A pick in the next draft wouldn't help the Blackhawks now and another depth player isn't what the Blackhawks need. The Chicago Blackhawks should ride the storm out with Panik and try to get him back to the player he was last year. Coach Q needs to do what ever he can to get Panik going again. The Blackhawks definitely miss the presence he brought to the ice last year. Hopefully, Panik can turn it around in the second half of the season.

Dick Enberg was the voice to many memorable Chicago Bears Moments http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/22/dick-enberg-was-the-voice-to-many-memorable-chicago-bears-moments/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/22/dick-enberg-was-the-voice-to-many-memorable-chicago-bears-moments/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 18:28:34 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48407

The sports world was saddened on Friday by the sudden passing of legendary sports broadcaster Dick Enberg. Enberg was one of the most recognizable voices in sports as he spent over 35 years as a national broadcaster for CBS and NBC calling MLB, NBA, college football, tennis, college basketball, and NFL games. He has ties to the Chicago Bears as during his time as lead announcer for NBC and CBS he had the call for some of the most memorable moments in Bears history. Most Bears fans will remember that it was Enberg and color analysis Merlin Olsen who called Super Bowl XX in which the 1985 Bears routed the New England Patriots 46-10. The most memorable moment of the game was defensive tackle William "The Refrigerator" Perry scored a one-yard touchdown with Enberg providing the signature call of " Perry....that one registered three point eight". The call not only emphasized Perry's size, but all the humor of a such a large player scoring a touchdown. https://youtu.be/ITeozxHXzVE A year earlier in 1984, it was Enberg and Olson who had the privilege of watching the Bears defense show the nation just how good they were in a highly anticipated game against the Los Angeles Raiders. The Raiders were the defending champions and many around the country believed that they featured the best defense in the NFL.  In front of a national audience, Enberg called what many believed to be one of the hardest hitting games in NFL history. Three quarterbacks were knocked from the game as the Bears lost Jim McMahon for the season and the Raiders nearly were forced to send their punter in at quarterback in a 17-6 Bears victory. The last iconic Bears moment that Enberg was the voice to came at the end of the famous 2001 Bears season. In the last game of the season, defensive tackle Keith Traylor intercepted a screen pass for a 67-yard return. The play was fitting for a season that saw such wild and unbelievable plays leading to the Bears first division title in 11 years. Enberg's call of the interception return is memorable is because of the humor and excitement he shares while describe Traylor's run back. https://youtu.be/73dW4740ILE For every classic sports moment, the moment is magnified more by the announcer's call of the play. Over his career as a national broadcaster, Enberg was the voice to many of those famous moments. From the 1970s to 2010, he voiced Super Bowls, World Series games, and Wimbledon matches representing just how versatile he was. His ability to call all different sports and ability to heighten the play through just the right words only made his more cherished and loved by sports fans.

Chicago Cubs meeting with Yu Darvish went “very good”, is there another coming? http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/19/chicago-cubs-meeting-with-yu-darvish-went-very-good-is-there-another-coming/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/19/chicago-cubs-meeting-with-yu-darvish-went-very-good-is-there-another-coming/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 19:30:12 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48404

The news broke on Monday that Chicago Cubs officials Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer were meeting with free agent starting pitcher Yu Darvish, showing their continued pursuit of a starter to add to their rotation. Following that meeting, Darvish sent out a tweet detailing how the meeting went. https://twitter.com/faridyu/status/942960981008887808 As you can see, the tweet is in Japanese. But from gathering various reports, the meeting apparently went very well. The Associated Press wrote that the meeting went very well according to Darvish's statement on Monday night. The meeting apparently lasted three-and-a-half hours long with Darvish, Epstein and Hoyer. Another point is that Darvish didn't use a translator to the meeting. The starter wanted to work on his English more so he wanted to do the meeting himself. He also says he's going to work on his English again on Tuesday, hinting that there's another meeting. Darvish does not say who he was meeting with on Tuesday. Darvish is seeking a deal for five-to-six years and the Cubs likely don't want to commit that far with the right-hander. ESPN Cubs beat writer Jesse Rogers was on ESPN 1000 this morning and hinted that Darvish could get a four-year deal from the Cubs. The pitcher finished last season 10-12 with a 3.86 ERA in starts for both the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He struggled in the World Series against the Houston Astros.

Mitchell Trubisky’s rough day had several positives http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/19/mitchell-trubiskys-rough-day-had-several-positives/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/19/mitchell-trubiskys-rough-day-had-several-positives/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 18:58:47 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48399

When John Fox met the media for his weekly Monday press conference, many were taken back when he said that rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had his best game of this season this past Saturday. The compliment is worth questioning as Trubisky threw three interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 66.8. Even with the stat line being bad, there were actually several bright spots to Trubisky's toughest loss. One of the aspects where Trubisky's game has improved over the last few weeks has been his pre-snap presence at the line of scrimmage. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains praised his starting quarterback's continuous ability to get his fellow teammates lined up correctly at the line. He did the same against both the Bengals and 49ers weeks before. Another pre-snap positive shown by the rookie quarterback was the hard count as he drew the Lions offsides three times on Saturday for penalties. Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, who was apart of the TV broadcast crew, was highly impressed with the young quarterback's successful execution being on the road in a dome setting. https://twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/942839934653669376 Many Bears pundits recently have been critical of the Bears lack of deep passing plays for their quarterback. Against the Lions, he was able to convert multiple long downs into first downs with precise down field pass plays. The first was when the Bears were facing a third and 18 late in the third quarter, the Bears quarterback found wide receiver Markus Wheaton well beyond the first down marker picking up the first down with a 22-yard completion. Then in the fourth quarter, the team faced first and 17 on their own one yard. Trubisky, while throwing from his own end zone, connected with Markus Wheaton over the middle for a 20-yard completion. The highly-touted arm strength was on display as there were a few special throws made that showed why Trubisky was such a highly touted prospect. Those throws came in the fourth quarter with the first being a 19-yard completion to Kendall Wright. Trubisky threw the ball from the pocket to Wright in tight coverage along the far sideline and put the ball only where Wright would be able to grab it. The other was another throw to Wright for a 12-yard completion during the final two minutes of the game. The target was questionable as Lions cornerback Quandre Diggs jumped the route and appeared to have picked off the pass, but the ball was fired with such velocity that it got past him and into Wright's hands. Statistically, it was a game that most rookie quarterbacks would want to forget, but there was a silver lining to what was seen in the game. The three interceptions came due to an overthrow, not seeing a safety, and a miscommunication on routes. Those can be coached out with film review and practice and is sometimes good for a rookie's maturation process. As much a game like this one are not fun, it's always important to find the small victories to build on.

Market is quiet compare to last year’s Winter Meetings for Chicago White Sox http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/market-is-quiet-compare-to-last-years-winter-meetings-for-chicago-white-sox/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/market-is-quiet-compare-to-last-years-winter-meetings-for-chicago-white-sox/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 17:19:18 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48377

Last year at the Major League Winter Meetings, the White Sox were the main focus after they begun their rebuild trading away All-Star pitcher Chris Sale and outfielder Adam Eaton. The moves signaled the start of the White Sox change in direction to rebuild through the draft and minor leagues. The team has had the same goals at this year's Winter Meetings, but unfortunately, do not have the pieces or position to make a move. Through the first three days of the meetings, the White Sox have yet to make a trade with any team as they have been looking to trade outfielder Avasil Garcia and or Jose Abreu if they get the right offer. Abreu is highly unlikely to be traded because the organization highly values his leadership during the rebuild and would need a highly favorable return before even considering a deal. Garcia is more likely of the two to be moved, but the market has not been favorable to the team especially after today's trade. The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants were two teams that were spurned by the Giancarlo Stanton no-trade clause as the Miami Marlins had principle agreements on a trade before Stanton said no.  Both teams were looking to add a power right-handed bat to their offenses as Garcia appeared to be a viable replacement for either team. The Cardinals on Wednesday did finalize a trade and filled their power need by trading for Marcell Ozuna of the Marlins. That leaves the Giants as the only high favorable trade partner for the White Sox who will not have any leverage over the Giants in getting the highest return for Garcia. There were also rumors the last few days that the White Sox were talking to the Baltimore Orioles in regards to trading for third baseman Manny Machado.  Many believe that White Sox will heavily target Machado when he becomes a free agent after the 2018 season as they will have only six million on their payroll and will be looking to compete in 2019. A trade this offseason would be a highly bad move on the White Sox part as a trade for Machado would cost them several prospects following a season where the team stockpiled prospects. Furthermore, it would be an embarrassment if the team trade for Machado, failed to compete this season, and was then unable to re-sign him in the off-season losing him and their prospects for nothing. General manager Rick Hahn did sign a few players last season to one-year deals with the intent of trading them if they had high trade value during the season. The plan worked for reliever Anthony Swarzak as they traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league Ryan Cordell. The move did not work out for starting pitcher Derek Holland who started the season off really well, only to perform poorly throughout the rest of season and was released in September. This year, one player the team may look to sign for a season could be outfielder Jose Bautista. Bautista has been a quiet name this off-season as his home run numbers and batting average has dropped the last two season in Toronto. He hit just 23 home runs and batted .305 last season, but could be a good signing for the White Sox playing in hitter-friendly Guaranteed Rate Field. If he is able to produce, he could be a big trade commodity for teams at the 2018 trade deadline as power bats are always in demand. Many should not be surprised by the White Sox inactivity at this year's Winter Meetings following their highly active 2017 season. The team does not have as many talent players with team friendly contracts that enabled them get the highest return on their trades. Furthermore, the success has driven teams to be weary of trading with the White Sox as they have rebuilt their farm system into the number one in baseball in less than one year's time. Hahn and the front office will make moves before the start of the 2018 season, but no one should expect the quality or quantity of moves that were made last year.]]>

Mitch Trubisky turns in his best performance of career against Cincinnati Bengals http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/mitch-trubisky-turns-in-his-best-performance-of-career-against-cincinnati-bengals/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/mitch-trubisky-turns-in-his-best-performance-of-career-against-cincinnati-bengals/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 14:00:54 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48375

Rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had his best performance of the year this past Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. He completed 25 of 32 passes for 271 yards and had both a passing and rushing touchdown. It was the first time all season that Trubisky had a multi-touchdown game. His performance ranks up there with one of the best Bears rookie quarterback performances of all-time. Trubisky became the first rookie quarterback to rush and pass for a touchdown in a game since Jim McMahon did it all the way back in 1982. McMahon did in a 26-13 win over the Patriots that saw him throw two red-zone touchdowns and scamper for a six yard score.  https://twitter.com/olin_kreutz/status/941021073520373771 Against Cincinnati, both of Trubisky's touchdowns came within Cincinnati's five yard line. The Bears produced 428-plus yards of offense against the Bengals, the most since their 490-yard game against the Dallas Cowboys in 2013. Trubisky's ability throwing the ball opened up the rushing attack as the game wore on. Jordan Howard, Tarik Cohen, and Trubisky combined to rush for 136 of the team's 232 rushing yards in the second half of the game. Of the 96 rushing yards in the first half, 35 yards came on the Bears first two rushes plays of the game. With three games left in the season, Trubisky still has a chance to break the Bears all-time rookie quarterback performance  in a game which was set back in 1999 by  Cade McNown. McNown had his best game as rookie and as a Bears when he passed for 301 yards and four touchdowns in a win against the Detroit Lions in a late December game. Report: Chicago White Sox have had talks about Manny Machado http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/report-chicago-white-sox-have-had-talks-about-manny-machado/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/14/report-chicago-white-sox-have-had-talks-about-manny-machado/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 06:43:50 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48383

Some of the biggest news that has broken during the 2017 Winter Meetings in Orlando was that the Baltimore Orioles were listening to offers for third baseman Manny Machado. Machado wants to play shortstop and the Orioles could grant his wish by trading him to another team, more specifically a team seeking a star player and ready to start winning. Could that team be the Chicago White Sox? Well, it's certainly looking that way. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the White Sox have been the most aggressive suitor for Machado. Here's what he said on the situation early Thursday morning:
In a surprising turn of events, the rebuilding Chicago White Sox emerged Wednesday as the most aggressive suitor for Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, according to major-league sources.
The report goes on to say that the White Sox would want to likely re-sign Machado before he becomes a free agent after next season. Rosenthal also mentions the possibility that they could sign and then flip him to a contender like the New York Yankees. As for what the White Sox will have to give up? Well, both Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech were mentioned. The package would be centered around one of those pitchers but not both of them. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/941191140665122816 Rick Hahn has built the best farm system in baseball to this point so trading away two valuable assets is highly unlikely. Keep an eye on this situation as the Winter Meetings continue this week.]]>

Are the Chicago Blackhawks back on track? http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/13/are-the-chicago-blackhawks-back-on-track/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/13/are-the-chicago-blackhawks-back-on-track/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 01:36:30 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48371

After losing five games in a row the Chicago Blackhawks have now won three-straight games. Does this mean the Blackhawks are back to their winning ways? Unfortunately, it's a possibility that the Blackhawks are in fact far from those days of winning. Don't get excited, the Blackhawks won three games against some of the worst teams in the NHL and they didn't exactly win those games in a convincing fashion. In two of the three games the Blackhawks came back late to win it OT and the other win was against the Arizona Coyotes, the worst team in the NHL. Besides the mediocre effort the past few games there have been some bright spots on this team:
  • Crawford was the deciding factor in all three of these games keeping the Blackhawks in it long enough for his offense to actually score a few goals.
  • Gustav Forsling has looked very comfortable logging heavy minutes the past couple games and seems to get better with each week.
  • The first line is finally starting to do first line things. Saad and Toews have started to put points on the board consistently and have received a nice boost with DeBrincat playing along side them.
Some player updates: The next three games against Winnipeg, Minnesota and Dallas will be a good test for the Blackhawks to see if they are capable of winning against decent teams. The Blackhawks play Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets at 7:00 PM CT.

Devin Hester was a big play specialist with the football http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/13/devin-hester-was-a-big-play-specialist-with-the-football/ http://www.chicitysports.com/2017/12/13/devin-hester-was-a-big-play-specialist-with-the-football/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 18:44:13 +0000 http://www.chicitysports.com/?p=48361

On Tuesday, Devin Hester announced his retirement from the NFL, leaving the game as the best return man in history and one of the more all-around exciting players in NFL history. From his first game as a pro way back in 2006 to his final game in the playoffs last season, anytime he touched the ball it was must-see television. Over his 11 year career, Hester showed so many times that he was the definition of a player who always explosive for a big play. When the Bears drafted him back in 2006 with a second round draft pick, many believed that the team had wasted too high of a draft pick on him because he was seen as being unable to consistently play at a certain position. The team picked Hester to make up for the failure of not signing then free agent wide receiver Antwaan Randle EL who was seen as premiere playmaker at the time. The pick paid off instantly as he returned an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first game of his career as the Bears beat the Green Bay Packers 26-0 in Week 1. The 2006 Bears season wasn't just exciting for their Super Bowl appearance, but for their dominant play during the season, including that of Hester who had a knack of making the big plays on the big stage. Many will remember his kick off return touchdown to open Super Bowl 41, but there were more during that season. four of his six return touchdowns in 2006 came in primetime games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ythJ7EXdN60 His second punt return of the season was the winning score against the Cardinals in the classic Monday Night comeback. He set a record for the longest touchdown ever as he returned a missed field goal against the Giants a then-record 108 yards for a touchdown. In the Bears final Monday Night appearance that season against the Rams, Hester returns two kick returns for touchdowns, including the second one being completely untouched on the runback. There would be no sophomore slump for Hester in the 2007 season as he returned a punt for a touchdown in just the second game of the season, and had both another punt return and kick return touchdown called back due to penalties in the same game. He recorded six return touchdowns and also caught two touchdown passes as well. In three different games, Hester scored two touchdowns, two of those games the team won and the other they lost at the end of regulation. All six touchdowns that season were 55 yards or longer in length. Hester would not post any return touchdowns during the 2008 and 2009 seasons and was actually relieved of his kickoff duties during that time as he was primarily used as a wide receiver. While playing wide receiver, he did have some success during those season as he was used as the Bears deep threat in the offense. In those two seasons Hester caught six touchdowns passes and had over 650 receiving yards both seasons. After two seasons without a return touchdown, Hester finally returned a punt for a touchdown in 2010 as he did in dramatic fashion against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. He returned to form as he had two more punt returns for touchdowns that season with the third setting the record for most return touchdowns in a career with 14. The record-setter came on another Monday Night game against the Vikings and should have been his second of the game as he returned one earlier in the game that was called back due to a holding penalty. Shop for Jerseys at the Official Store of the Chicago Bears From 2011 to 2016, Hester would have 5 more return touchdowns setting the all-time record for return touchdowns as a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2014. When he left the Bears following the 2013 season, he would play for three more teams including the Falcons, Ravens, and lastly the Seattle Seahawks. His best season would be the 2014 season as he had one punt return touchdown, two receiving touchdowns, and his only rushing touchdown of his career. During his 11 year career, he scored a combined 36 touchdowns between offense and special teams. It was his time with the Bears where Hester showed how valuable of a football player he truly was. From the time he was both a wide receiver and return specialist in 2008, Hester recorded at least one play of 25 yards and longer or a touchdown in a game 34 times with the Bears. Of his 12 receiving touchdowns, nine of them were 20 yards or longer. Finally, he scored two touchdowns in a game seven times during his career. Now that he is retired, Hester will have to wait five years before he is eligible for the Hall of Fame. His value to the Bears and to the NFL is unheralded as he was a specialist at one of the hardest positions in the NFL. NFL teams cycle through masses of players at kickoff and punt return positions hoping to find one that could break just one return touchdown. Even when away from the ball, Hester had an effect on field position as opposing teams would sacrifice good field position to keep the ball out of his hands. In a league that demands big plays, it was Hester that made them both in special teams and offense for the Bears, and a skill set to make those big plays won't be seen again for a while.
